Bertie Next Door

When Terry and I were first married we lived in a tiny 1 bedroom apartment and Bertie was our next door neighbor.  She and her “Rexie” had been married for a bazillion years and he had passed away not long before we moved in next to her.  She spoke so often and so kindly of her Rexie it got to the place where Terry and I felt we knew him, too.  She loved him so – and missed him so.  Well, anyway, I would take Bertie on her errands from time to time – and the one that I want to share actually coincides with this week’s kindness challenge:  If someone says they like something of yours…give it to them.  I had never heard this before but I watched it happen with Bertie at the bank.  I waited in line with Bertie for her favorite teller and when we got to her window Bertie greeter her like a long lost friend.  The Teller obviously remembered Bertie and responded in kind.  They chatted a bit then the teller told Bertie she loved her necklace and earrings.  Bertie proceeded to take them off and hand them to her.  The Teller was taken aback by the gesture but Bertie insisted.  The Teller actually put them on right then and graciously thanked Bertie for her kind gift.

Have you ever heard of or experienced this act of kindness?  I’d love to hear about it if you have.  I find it most intriguing.

Kindness Challenge Week 30:  If someone says they like something of yours…give it to them.

  1. I complimented my boss on his tie. He quickly removed it and handed it to me. I then complimented him on his Jaguar. He just smiled.
